Telegram is generous with text. Its 4,096-character message limit dwarfs Twitter's 280 and beats Discord's 2,000. But messages aren't the only place where limits matter. Bios, usernames, captions, and channel names all have their own ceilings. Here's every number you need.
Message Limit: 4,096 Characters
Standard Telegram messages cap at 4,096 characters. That's roughly 650 to 800 words—enough for a detailed update, a short essay, or a well-structured announcement. If your text exceeds the limit, Telegram won't send it. The app surfaces a character counter as you approach the cap.
For reference, 4,096 characters is nearly 15 times what Twitter/X gives free users (280 characters). If you're drafting something long, run it through a character counter before pasting it into Telegram to make sure you're under the wire.
Channel Post Limit: 4,096 Characters
Channel posts share the same 4,096-character ceiling as regular messages. This applies to text-only posts. If you run a Telegram channel for newsletters, community updates, or content distribution, you have substantial room for each post.
For content that exceeds 4,096 characters, split it across multiple posts or link to a full article. Telegram's Instant View feature can render external articles directly within the app if your site supports the required markup.
Bio: 70 Characters
Telegram bios are tight: just 70 characters. That's shorter than a tweet. You need to be surgical. A typical bio fits a role, a short tagline, or a URL—not all three.
Tips for the 70-character bio:
- Lead with what matters most (your role or what you do)
- Cut filler words. "Designer at Acme" beats "I am a designer working at Acme Inc."
- If you include a link, it counts toward the 70-character total
Username: 5–32 Characters
Telegram usernames must be between 5 and 32 characters. They support letters, numbers, and underscores only. Usernames are case-insensitive—@UserName and @username resolve to the same account.
Group and Channel Names: 128 Characters
Group names and channel titles allow up to 128 characters. Most effective names are much shorter. Aim for under 30 characters for readability and discoverability. But if you need a descriptive title for a niche community or announcement channel, you have room.
Media Captions: 1,024 Characters
Photo, video, and file captions are limited to 1,024 characters. That's enough for a detailed description, context paragraph, or short narrative alongside the media. Captions support the same formatting as regular messages.
