How Instagram comments actually work
Instagram doesn't list comments by time by default: Meta says an AI system ranks them for each viewer, weighing signals such as a comment's relevance to the post and its popularity, and viewers can switch to Most recent. That's why a specific, on-topic reply does more than a generic "nice post." Instagram's help center says a comment can't include more than five @mentions or more than 30 hashtags, and you can't post the same comment twice. It doesn't publish a length limit; guides put it at 2,200 characters, but a sentence or two is usually plenty.
Instagram comment tips
- Reference something specific in the photo, Reel or caption; it gives the creator something to answer and makes the comment clearly relevant.
- Tag people only when they'd want to see the post. Instagram allows up to five @mentions in a comment, and each one sends a notification.
- Don't paste the same comment across posts. Instagram blocks repeated comments, and Meta's spam rules cover posting at very high frequencies.
- Made a typo? Since April 2026 you can edit a comment's text for 15 minutes, and others will see that it was edited.

Instagram Comment Generator — common questions
Latest questions readers ask us about this topic.
What's the character limit for an Instagram comment?
Instagram's help center doesn't publish one, and third-party guides list 2,200 characters, the same as a caption. The rules Instagram does document: no more than five @mentions or 30 hashtags in a comment, and no posting the same comment twice. A sentence or two is usually plenty.
How many hashtags or mentions can a comment have?
Up to five @mentions and up to 30 hashtags, according to Instagram's help center; going over either limit stops the comment from posting. Under someone else's post, hashtags are mostly clutter, so tag only people who would want to see it.
Why do my Instagram comments get hidden or filtered?
Instagram's "Hide unwanted comments" setting is on by default, creators can add their own Hidden Words, and a restricted account's comments are visible only to that account unless approved. Instagram doesn't tell you when a comment is hidden. Repeated or rapid-fire comments can also run into Meta's spam rules, so write each comment for the post in front of you.
