Why format text on TikTok?

TikTok is a fast, visual feed, and captions, comments and bios are plain text with no bold or italic buttons. A short styled phrase in your bio or the first line of a caption can make a profile look deliberate, as long as the words people search for stay in plain text.

Best practices for TikTok

  • Keep video captions short and let one styled word do the visual work.
  • Use Script or Bold Script for your display name and Small Caps for a tagline. Keep your @username plain: TikTok only allows letters, numbers, underscores and periods there.
  • For TikTok Shop creators, bold the price/promo line in your bio.
  • Heads-up: TikTok doesn't say whether its search matches styled letters to plain ones, so put the keywords you want to be found for in plain text.

Yes. Styled Unicode pastes into captions, comments, your bio and your display name on iOS, Android and the web. The exception is your @username, which only accepts plain letters, numbers, underscores and periods.

They can. Styled letters are different characters from plain ones, and TikTok doesn't say whether its search treats them as the same words, so keep searchable keywords in plain text in your bio and the first sentence of your caption.

You can paste them anywhere TikTok lets you type, including a LIVE title, but TikTok doesn't document how styled characters display there. Check the preview before you go live, and skip heavy combining marks like underline or strikethrough, which render unevenly on some phones.
