How Threads usernames work
Most people sign up for Threads with Instagram, and Instagram's help center says a Threads username that differs from your Instagram one switches off features such as the Threads badge and sharing Instagram or Facebook posts to Threads. That makes this less about inventing a new name and more about choosing a handle that works on both: letters, numbers, periods and underscores, kept well under the 30 characters guides cite for Instagram. Because Threads is text-first and conversational, a handle that's easy to type in a reply and quote in a screenshot matters even more. This generator suggests cross-platform-friendly handles you can claim on Instagram and carry straight into Threads.
Threads username tips
- Use the same handle on Threads and Instagram to keep the Threads badge and cross-posting, so pick one that suits both a visual feed and a text reply.
- Text-first platforms reward typeable handles — short and lowercase beats clever punctuation.
- If you're starting fresh, claim the name on Instagram too, so both profiles can match.
- Keep keywords in your Threads display name and bio, not the handle.

Threads Username Generator — common questions
Latest questions readers ask us about this topic.
Can I have a different username on Threads than Instagram?
Yes, but it costs features. Instagram's help center says that if your Threads and Instagram usernames don't match, your Threads badge disappears, you can't share Instagram or Facebook posts to Threads, and a Meta Verified badge won't carry over.
What characters can a Threads username use?
Threads doesn't publish separate rules. Instagram usernames use letters, numbers, periods and underscores with no spaces, and guides put the limit at 30 characters, so a handle that fits those rules works on both apps.
Do I need a separate account for Threads?
Usually not. Most people sign up with their Instagram account, which brings the username over. Instagram's help center also describes signing up for Threads without an Instagram account, which isn't available everywhere.
