How Unicode text styles work

Unicode contains thousands of pre-styled letters in ranges like Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (U+1D400). Each styled letter is its own character: 𝗮 (U+1D5EE, Mathematical Sans-Serif Bold Small A) is distinct from a (U+0061, Latin Small Letter A). When you paste a styled character, the style travels with it because it is the character, not a formatting layer on top of it.

That is why Unicode text styles work in plain-text fields like LinkedIn posts, Instagram bios, X/Twitter, TikTok captions and Discord usernames, even though none of those platforms has a bold or italic button. The tradeoff: screen readers often read styled Unicode letter by letter, and search engines treat each styled character as a math symbol. Use them for emphasis, not for body text.
